Everything You Need to Know about PVC Radiator Covers
Radiator covers are a popular addition for a wide range of settings. While they’ve traditionally been made from medium-density fibreboard, PVC radiator covers are growing in popularity.
In this post, we’ll discuss the importance of radiator covers, why PVC is the way forward and the different types available.
Does my site need radiator covers?
The surface of a radiator can reach up to 80°C. That’s the main reason why radiator covers are a necessity in environments where scalding is a risk.
This includes schools and nurseries, where curious children could touch or even fall into the hot surface. They’re also necessary in hospitals and care homes, where patients are at a higher risk of falls due to medical conditions or drowsiness from medication.
As well as these environments, radiator covers are a nice-to-have for practically any building. They look a lot nicer than radiators, especially if your radiators are looking worse for wear. And let’s face it – nobody likes getting burnt by a hot surface.
Benefits of PVC radiator covers
The next question is why you should choose PVC radiator covers? Traditionally, radiator covers are made from medium-density fibreboard (MDF). Here’s why PVC is a superior alternative:
Better durability
PVC is a material that’s made to last. As such, it can easily cope with the usual knocks and scuffs that radiators go through on a daily basis. Going one further, it can even withstand the impact of challenging environments, where patients or children might hit or fall into the surface.
Waterproof
One of the biggest issues with MDF radiator covers is that they soak up moisture. This can cause the materials to weaken over time. That makes them unsuitable for wet areas like toilets and bathrooms. Metal covers have a similar problem, as they will rust because of the moisture. On the other hand, PVC radiator covers are completely waterproof.
Low maintenance
PVC’s waterproof properties also make your radiator covers easier to clean. They can be wiped clean without the need for excessive scrubbing or specialist cleaning materials.
Non-conductive
It’s well known that plastic is a good insulator. That allows your PVC radiator cover to maintain a low surface temperature with the addition of a foil lining. Our PVC radiator covers are compliant with NHS Directive D4 for surface temperatures – not to mention having a Class 1 fire rating for your peace of mind.
Types
Last but not least, let’s look at the different types of PVC radiator covers we can supply and install:
Standard PVC radiator covers
Standard or ‘classic’ radiator covers conceal the entire surface of your radiator with vents along the top and bottom to allow heat to radiate through your room. They measure 900mm in height with a choice of lengths – 1,000mm, 1,200mm, 1,500mm and 1,800mm.
Radiator covers with a top shelf
Another option are PVC radiator covers with a top shelf. They have the same design as standard covers but with a larger panel on top. The shelf is also heat-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about items getting too hot when you set them down.
Bespoke radiator covers
Finally, there are bespoke radiator covers which can be made custom to your requirements. Options include:
- Wall mounted radiator covers.
- Sloped-top anti-climb designs.
- Double-thickness for extra durability.
- Anti-ligature covers to prevent self-harming.
- Covers with lockable access doors.
- Polycarbonate covers.
- Radiator covers for bay windows.
